Our Calling
Mji wa Huruma was developed in 1978, after African families were evicted from the Cheleta coffee plantation.
Its name, Home of Mercy, came from the nearby Salvation Army home for the aged.
On the land where Runda’s mansions now stand, a small community of 1,500 people carved out life on just 500 square metres at the edge of Karura Forest.
For years, children here and in neighbouring Githogoro grew up in poverty, forced out of school too soon, their dreams dimmed before they could take flight.
New Dawn Educational Center was founded in 2006 by Irene Tongoi, to serve as a beacon of light and a lifeline of hope.

The Heart Of Our Work
Academics
New Dawn Educational Center has provided KCSE (secondary) education since 2006 and has graduated over 1500 students.
Learning is integrated with Christian Bible-based faith as we recognise that God is the source of knowledge and understanding.
Spirituality
Our students take part in a variety of sports activities including rugby, football and netball. Many also enjoy learning music and the performing arts.
Co-Curricular Activities
Our Commitment To Access
It costs Kshs. 65,000 a year to educate one student at New Dawn.
Families are asked to contribute just Kshs. 19,500 but for most, even this reduced fee is out of reach, weighed down by generations of economic struggle.
The school therefore relies on donations to support scholarships for the extremely needy but determined students of New Dawn Educational Center.

Step Into The Story
Meet Sylvia Mbinya
Rising against the odds, Sylvia discovered her passion and strength through rugby. Her talent, grit, and hard work have now earned her a place on the radar of Kenya’s national team, proving that with faith, discipline, and support, dreams can truly take flight.
Meet Haron Otieno
Sports open doors to a brighter future - steering young people away from drugs and idleness, and giving them a powerful alternative: discipline, purpose, and hope. On the field, they discover not just talent, but the courage to dream bigger and the strength to pursue a different path.
Help Dreams Take Flight
New Dawn Educational Center is shaping tomorrow’s leaders, but our students need spaces that match their potential.
We’re inviting visionary individuals and corporate partners to help us transform our school: modern facilities, and inspiring spaces where learning thrives.
Your investment doesn’t just build walls, it builds futures, leaving a legacy of hope, opportunity, and impact for generations to come.
